The COVID-19 pandemic caught us unexpectedly and has stayed with us for longer than we wanted it. It's no surprise that being stuck at home for months has our travel bug itching. Many people have opted for road trips, hikes, and camping, as forms of entertainment that allow social distancing. However, it's always good to take extra considerations, to ensure that you and your dog, travel safely.
Here are a few tips for traveling with your dog during the pandemic:
Social Distancing
- When walking, whether it's hikes, the park, or anywhere else, make sure to keep your dog on a leash. Our doggies are typically friendly animals and tend to run towards other dogs or people. Having them on a leash will prevent you from having to interact with others when trying to retrieve your dog.
- With pandemic guidelines and closures constantly changing, it's a good idea to do some research beforehand on what locations are currently open and how they're monitoring social distancing.
Traveling Through Air
- Not all pet-friendly airlines are currently allowing pets to fly. It's important to check with each airline on their current COVID-19 guidelines and regulations.
- Keep in mind that many states and countries have quarantine requirements when you arrive.
Other Things to Think About
- As mentioned previously, many of the places where your dog would normally be able to walk, play, and use the bathroom might be close, so it would be a good idea to make a list of places you can be sure will be open, to avoid any accidents.
- It is important to make sure your dog is current on important vaccines, as some locations won't allow you without the vaccinations being up to date.
- It's recommended to always bring with you a First Aid Kit for your pet, in case of emergencies during travel. Here's information on How to Create a First Aid Kit for Your Pet (Includes FREE Downloadable Checklist)
