Our pets are our best friends and can help us age healthfully as we move into our senior years. As it’s time to move into senior housing, you may be wondering how you can make the most of your golden years with your best friend by your side. Fortunately, many senior living centers understand the importance of pets and allow animals. Here, Love & Pawsitivity shares some tips as you begin your search for a new place to call home.
A great first step is to take the time to research long-term care living centers in your community or the community of your choice. While many do allow pets, there might be limits on the number of pet-friendly rooms available. Further, some might specify the maximum size of the animal or limit you to one per room. It’s also best to evaluate yourself and your pet before you move. Can you reasonably care for them each day? Are they young and used to a large yard?
Once you find housing that allows pets, the next logical step is to have your dog or cat spayed or neutered if you haven’t yet done so. Removing your pet’s ability to have a litter will help to decrease overpopulation. The American Veterinary Medical Association explains further that neutering an animal also offers some protective health benefits and may reduce frustrating behaviors, such as roaming. Note that this type of procedure isn’t recommended for older animals.
Even if you’re in excellent health and now with no mobility impairments, it pays to look ahead to your pet’s well-being just in case. While your long-term care community may have an animal coordination specialist on hand, it’s always smart to have a contingency plan. Talk with your family, including adult children and grandchildren, about whether or not they can take over your pet’s care if you are injured or become temporarily – or permanently – incapacitated. You might also consider outsourcing certain chores, such as walking and grooming, to a pet care service to ensure these get done routinely whether you’re in good health or not.
Long-term care is not inexpensive. On the low end, LCT costs average $3,638 per month, but this can easily skyrocket to as much as $7,698 a month or more. Add the expense of a pet into the mix, and your costs can easily skyrocket. Because of this, it also makes sense to know exactly how much you can afford and how you will pay for your new living expenses. For many seniors, this means selling your home. You can live off the equity, and, with a little bit of research, you may be able to get more out of your house by doing some inexpensive home remodeling projects. Other options include tapping into your personal savings or finding an assisted living center that’s affordable based on your Social Security or pension.
If it’s time to move into assisted living, you don’t have to let fear of leaving your furry friend behind stop you. Many centers are progressive enough to allow both dogs and cats, and you have options, such as getting your friends and family to help or hiring a pet sitter, to provide supplemental care on the days you are unable. It takes research, so make sure to start early and choose wisely.

No matter how much you love your pet, it’s easy to get frustrated and angry when you come home to the destruction he causes. Maybe he’s eating your shoes, digging at your carpet, or tearing up your cushions. Fortunately, Love & Pawsitivity shares a few things you can do to protect your home from your destructive pet.
Remember, it’s normal for dogs to chew, play, and explore. The problem is when the behaviors ruin your home and belongings. Typically, dogs are destructive during the day because they get bored. When your dog can’t interact with you because you’re away, he will engage in destructive behaviors. Other dogs are destructive because they seek attention or have separation anxiety. One of the best ways to address these causes of destructive behavior is to hire a dog walker or a pet sitter.
Dog walkers and pet sitters drop in to your home to spend time with your dog. Dog walkers are an ideal solution for dogs who have pent-up energy and destroy your home out of boredom because they get your dog out of the house and give him plenty of exercise when you cannot.
On the other hand, pet sitters are a solution for dogs with separation anxiety or fears and phobias and who need more supervision during the day to curb their destructive behavior. Hire a dog walker or pet sitters using online sites or advertising on social media. It’s worth mentioning that dog walkers and pet sitters are a better alternative than boarding your dog in a kennel, where he can pick up illnesses or feel abandoned.
Some dog owners swear by using crates for their dogs. Crates serve as a training and safety device for dogs, and they give them a place of their own. Use the crate properly so that your dog does not engage in destructive behavior inside it and so that he does not refuse to go in it. First, use a crate based on the size of your dog. Make sure he can stand up, turn around, and lie down comfortably. Give him a couple of safe toys but don’t overload the crate. If you have a puppy, purchase a larger crate so he can grow into it. A puppy weight calculator can help you determine the likely size of specific breeds so you can get a crate large enough for an adult dog.
Also, do not leave your dog crated too long. Crate your dog no longer than one hour for each month of age and not exceed nine or ten hours per day. If this time is too long for your dog, as in he has accidents in the crate or destroys his items in the crate, hire a dog walker or pet sitter to exercise and play with him to break up his day. It is imperative that you give your dog an hour of exercise before and after he is in his crate, too. Fitbark offers ten fun ways you can exercise your dog, if you need some ideas.
If you're lucky enough to live in a rental that allows pets, it's especially important to protect your place. If you and your pet are struggling, though, you could even consider an upgrade; choosing a place with a fenced yard, or one closer to a dog park, might make all the difference if you have a canine companion. Check into available apartments in the area. There’s no shortage in Stamford – more than 270 units are ready to rent, just be sure to verify whether they accept pets.
You cannot expect your dog to behave properly if you don’t spend adequate time training him. It is not fair to rely on a dog walker, pet sitter, or crate to train your dog for you. Proper training will help curb his destructive behavior and ensure he behaves when he spends time with a dog walker or pet sitter. Nylabone suggests it’s a good idea to begin with leash training. Practice walking him on a leash around your house and yard and then take trips around the neighborhood and to the vet.
You also want to ensure that your dog has strong table manners. Ask the American Kennel Club notes, your friends, family, and pet sitter will appreciate knowing that your dog won’t beg for food. If you have children, make sure that you train your dog to remain calm when they get close to his food or water bowls. Dogs that are overly protective of their meals often snap at young children.
It’s not much fun to have a destructive pet. You can protect your home by hiring a dog walker or pet sitter and using a crate. You also should properly train your dog to curb his destructive behavior and make sure he has good manners at home and in public.

Did you grow up with a pet who taught you about unconditional love? If you want your children to have a pet and create some wonderful memories of their own, think carefully about the kind of pet that’s right for your family. Not only will your children have a companion, but they’ll also learn a lot of important life skills such as responsibility, compassion, and respect.
Visit Love & Pawsitivity for shirts, tank tops, accessories, and gifts for pet lovers. View our collection today!
Don’t be hasty when selecting the perfect pet for your children. Find out if your child has any pet allergies and which animals you can have that won’t aggravate their symptoms. Next, think about your schedule, and then make sure you’ll have enough time to take care of the pet you choose. Some pets, such as lizards or fish, don’t require as much time, and your child can still learn from their pet while providing them with ample care; the best pets for kids include rabbits, hamsters, turtles, and birds, The most popular pets for kids are cats and dogs, and all these animals can be fantastic pets for your children.
Caring for a pet is a big responsibility, and if you want your children to look after their pet, it’s important to prepare them for pet ownership beforehand. You can start by introducing your child to a friend’s pet so they can have a chance to get comfortable around pets. Teach your children how to act around dogs and explain that it’s not nice to pull their pet’s tail or ears or hold onto them when they want to get down. You want to make sure your child will be safe around pets, so prepare them for pets by teaching them the basics before you bring home a pooch.
Having a pet is a big responsibility, and your little ones will learn a lot from having a pet. If you choose to get a dog, your children will need to remember to feed the dog every day, take him for walks, and even clean up after their favorite pooch. Make sure you set appropriate tasks for the age of your children. Younger children can do chores like refilling the water dish, while older children will be able to do more difficult tasks like cleaning the litter box.
When you have a pet, your children will learn some other incredible life lessons, including trust, compassion, and loyalty. Your pet will show unconditional love to your family, and this will build social skills and self-esteem in your children.
If you’ve never had a pet before, take some time to learn about pet health and research flea and tick collars to keep your dog safe and healthy. Not only do these collars protect your pup from insidious insects, but they will also protect your pet from the diseases they carry. Additionally, they will help keep fleas and ticks out of your home. When shopping for a flea collar for your pet, look for a collar with a long life, and make sure it’s suitable for the age and size of your pet. Purchase a collar and that is water-resistant so you won’t need to worry about it being damaged in the rain or when your dog jumps into the lake with your children.
Another way to ensure your dog’s safety is constructing a fence around your property to prevent wandering and escapes. Installing a fence averages $4,500, but you can save if you use materials like wood. When searching for reputable fencing companies, only work with installers who receive positive reviews and feedback from past customers.
If your children have been begging for a pet, think about all the benefits of pet ownership. Your children will learn responsibility, develop social skills faster, and be encouraged to get more exercise. Kids who grow up with pets are also less prone to allergies and get sick less often. Find the best pet for your family, and prepare your child for the responsibility of pet ownership.

Nothing can ever prepare you for the joy of owning a German Shepherd, but what you can and should prepare for are the added responsibilities of owning your first pet. From choosing the right pup to helping them adjust to your life, there are so many things to think about before you bring your new companion home. Love and Pawsitivity offers some tips to make planning for a new pet a little easier.
When you’re considering adopting a German Shepherd puppy, you should try to gauge whether or not your lifestyle will be a good fit. Do you have enough space in your home? Do you prefer to stay active? Do you have a backyard? Are you able to be home enough to help your new pup adjust? These are crucial questions to ask yourself before you take the leap. Dog’s Best Life warns that you should be fully prepared for the commitment before bringing a puppy into your life.
Companion animals depend on people for everything from food to play, so pick up some supplies that will make the transition easier on everyone. For new pup parents, keeping up with feedings and potty breaks can be a hassle, but convenient options like electronic dog doors and automatic feeders can make these daily tasks simpler. Automatic pet feeders are an especially practical tool if you work outside of your home and can encourage your dog to stay on a consistent feeding schedule.
If you’re planning on selling your home in the near future, you should remember to put all your pup’s things away before you show the house to anyone. You should also make sure your dog isn’t at the showing as this could be distracting to viewers. This will make it more likely for your house to sell.
If you’re like most people, change can make you nervous. Animals are even more sensitive to changes in their routines and environments. When you bring your new dog home, allow some time for them to really feel comfortable in your home. Providing positive encouragement in the form of treats and praise can help them get acclimated. For many animals, however, your patience and understanding are most important.
Dog Time recommends having designated places where your dog can rest and safe places they can retreat to when they are feeling nervous. Animals that have been rescued can be especially nervous in a new environment, but once they feel at home, rescue animals make some of the best pets. Try to set up a consistent routine from the start, and take your time with training.
Any time you bring a new pup into your home, especially a puppy, the likelihood of house training accidents goes up. Older dogs are usually house trained already, though they may have an accident or two as they adjust to their surroundings. Puppies, on the other hand, are a different matter. With proper training, you will eventually get your pup housebroken, but it could take some time, so be patient! Do yourself a favor and have special cleaning supplies on hand to tackle stains and odors. If you allow your dog to roam the house freely, be mindful of furniture and carpeting. Occasionally it can take a puppy longer to house train, so prepare yourself mentally for potential carpet cleaning or even upholstery refitting or restoration.
Finally, don’t forget to spend time bonding with your pet by doing what they love! This could mean taking some pet-friendly outdoor trips, regular trips to the dog park, allowing them to tag along when you go out to eat or get a coffee, or all of the above! As pets become a more integral part of our lives, more businesses are becoming friendlier toward our four-legged family members. Since time with your new pal is the best way to bond, that’s really good news for new pet parents!
For first-time German Shepherd owners, planning is important. Getting your home, your life and yourself ready to take home a new pet will make this journey so much sweeter. Be prepared for your new pet, and be prepared for a lifetime of love, companionship and joy!

Whether you’ve got your eye set on a spunky puppy, a middle-aged mutt, or a wise old senior, your first dog is sure to work its way deep into your heart. There’s just something about dogs that makes us fall in love with them; in fact, they’ve evolved to love us and be as lovable as possible. So, it’s natural that you’d want to have the best gear for your new best friend.
In addition to the healthiest food, a strong leash, and a comfy spot for your pal to rest his head, your phone is one of the best tools you can use to be a great dog parent. Double-check that your smartphone is compatible with and fast enough to run all the best dog owner apps. If it doesn’t fit the bill, it may be time for an upgrade — after all, you don’t want to be caught with a lackluster device in your pup’s time of need.
Now that you’re ready, here are four apps that can make you an even better dog owner than you already are:
There are few things more distressing than realizing you can’t find your pet. Once, your only option would be to put up lost dog posters and hope someone spots your missing pal. Now, however, you can use a tracker and tracking app like Tagg to simply figure out where your dog has gone and quickly get reunited. This is a great app for new pet owners or those long-time owners who know their dog is great-escape inclined.
There are a lot of items that are perfectly safe for humans that are very dangerous for dogs, and our furry friends have an amazing talent for seeking those dangerous items out. If you discover that your pup has a mouthful of onions or is surrounded by half-chewed flowers, it’s important to be able to figure out if they’re in danger. PupTox gives you a quick and easy way to look up whatever your dog got into and see if it’s time to head to the vet.
If you’re getting to know your first dog, you’re bound to have questions about how to keep them healthy. The Pet First Aid app by the American Red Cross (for Android and iOS) gives detailed information about everything from how to stop bleeding to finding a pet-friendly hotel. This app will save you from panicking and tell you how to care for your best friend.
One of the best ways to instill learning while training your dog is through the use of a clicker. This little sound helps your dog recognize when it’s achieved a task. iTrainer, for example, not only gives you an easy to use “click” noise, but it also features a dog whistle to get your pup’s attention, and several entertaining sounds such as birds, dogs, and squeaky toys. Plus, it has information on how to achieve clicker training through positive reinforcement.
Dogs are wonderful, and your first will always have a special place in your heart. Don’t let the work of caring for your four-legged friend intimidate you. Smartphones put a world of pet-friendly apps at your fingertips, empowering you to be the best dog owner you can be.

These days, many of us have smartphones on us at all times. Yet there are so many record keeping tasks that go undone when we delegate them to digital, probably because it's so easy to get distracted or the process of getting started is daunting.
We recently found ourselves sifting through stacks of receipts and records to organize Minnie's health records for her vet appointment. We said "there has to be a better way", but a lot of the options out there cost money. But we were confident we could design something that fit our needs and when possible we like to keep things simple. What we came up with was so helpful, we instantly wanted to spread the love and make it available to you all for your fur-babies.
After looking around a bit, we had an idea of what would be helpful for us and we are hopeful this can help you too.
With this printable you can keep track of allergies and conditions, important information like weight history and when they last had a check-up and their booster shots. You can also keep track of what medications or labs they had and when. And we left plenty of space for notes so you can keep track of other info that is important for you.
This printable is broken into 3 pages: general pet info and info on common diseases/viruses for which there are vaccines, medical history, and notes. Note that the info we provide on common diseases and vaccines applies mostly to dogs, but we plan to make a cat specific version as well in the future and will link to it here when it's ready.
You can purchase this printable to download it. Your purchase entitles you to access to any updates we make to this printable for free, forever!
*This printout is meant for informational purposes and for personal use for tracking your own pet’s medical records. It is NOT meant to be an official, vet-approved form.
]]>What do you do if you are busily launching your own home-based business and you see a post for a shelter pet that you instantly bond with? Go ahead and adopt Fido or Fluffy! Pets make the best co-workers when you work from home. They show up every day with adoring eyes to encourage you while you tackle your to-do list, and only ask for meals and a couple of head scratches in return. Here are some ideas from Love & Pawsitivity to help you settle in your new pet and still get all your business tasks done.
Giving your new furry friend a spot of their own and some toys to play with helps them settle in comfortably and minimize interruptions while you are working.
Additionally, set up your home office with all the tools and equipment you need for your new business. Consider buying a keyboard cover to keep an overexcited pet from accidentally typing while you are on a conference call.
On the first day, create a workable daily routine for your pet to adjust to. Start with some playful and affectionate interaction and repeat this at lunchtime and after work. This helps prevent any mischievous behavior from your furry friend designed to distract you from your work.
For your company, design a detailed schedule of all the tasks needed to launch your business and prioritize the most important ones. Break down large jobs into smaller tasks and plot them out on your weekly calendar.
Your pet will probably take a long nap in the early afternoon. Use that time to tackle your most important tasks that require your focused attention.
Pet naptime is the ideal moment to get a limited liability company set up for your new company to protect yourself from personal liability for any business debts or possible lawsuits. It also simplifies tax time as you won't need to file a separate return for your company. Read up on New York's requirements and the steps necessary for setting up the LLC by visiting https://www.newyorkllc.net/, and complete the task online or hire a lawyer to handle it for you.
If you have trouble managing your new pet's behavior, find a trainer in your area for help. He or she can work with you and your furry friend to redirect negative behaviors and reward positive ones. You can also learn helpful tips on how to care for your pet.
Outsourcing some of those business tasks you identified to start your company helps you focus on completing the ones you have the talent and motivation to do on your own. Try hiring a virtual assistant to handle your office administrative tasks. Consider giving your accounting, marketing and web design and development needs to talented freelancers who specialize in those areas.
You can successfully manage simultaneously launching your business and adopting a new pet with detailed planning, prioritization of tasks and hiring outside help when you need it.
Whether you're working or spending downtime with your pet, show off your love for them with Love & Pawsitivity's chic, pet-centric clothing and accessories!

The most common places for dogs to get frostbite are the tips of their ears, the tips of their tails, and their paws. If a dog is wet or damp, these areas are more likely to get frostbite.
Some of the symptoms that your dog will get when he has frostbite are:
Some of these signs may take a few days to show up, especially if the affected areas are small. Areas with severe frostbite will become necrotic or die. When the tissue starts to die, it will change colors to a dark blue or black. After a few days or weeks, it will slough or fall off. Sometimes, a secondary bacterial infection can start off, so pus may form or a smell may start, if not taken care of it on time.
If you think your dog has frostbite, take your dog to the vet immediately. While you're able to do that:
The prognosis for frostbite will depend on the extent of your dog's injuries.
These dogs are most susceptible to frostbite:
Frostbite can be dangerous, even in 30-degree weather. So while we know that not taking your dog out isn't an option, make sure to keep an eye for all the signs we mentioned before when you're out for a walk.

Today we are excited to share with you our first guest post! Jessica from OurBestFriends.pet has some great tips for first time cat adopters. This info would have been helpful when I adopted my cat, which makes me more excited to share them with you all! Enjoy!
Are you getting ready to adopt a cat for the very first time? You probably can’t wait to head to the shelter to bring home your feline friend. Maybe you’re already stocking up on cute clothing and gear from Love & Pawsitivity to show everyone how excited you are about your new animal companion! But before you officially adopt a cat, it’s important to research everything you’ll need to do to make them feel at home. Here are a few tips that will benefit anyone adopting their first cat.
It’s best to stock up on supplies for your cat before you bring them home. For example, you will need to pick up a litter box, a few bags of litter, toys, a collar, and a scratching post. When it comes to toys, Catster recommends choosing light, soft toys that they can easily swat, pounce on, and carry in their mouths.
A day or two before you go to the shelter, it’s a good idea to clean your house and put away any clutter. You want to make sure that your cat can safely explore their new home, so remove any plants that might be toxic for their digestive system!
Once you’ve brought your cat home, give them time to relax and settle in. They will likely feel a bit anxious, so it’s important to be patient and show them affection when they’re ready.
When planning your cat’s diet, you may find it simplest to stick with the brand of food they were eating at the shelter. But if you’d like to switch to a new brand of food, it’s important to check out the ingredients first. You can introduce your cat to their new food gradually so that it doesn’t upset their stomach.
For the sake of convenience, you may want to use a food delivery service. Having fresh, high-quality cat food delivered to your front door can help you save time. To find a reliable delivery service, check out online reviews to get insight from other customers.
If you adopted an older cat from the shelter, there’s a good chance that they already know how to use a litter box. However, if you adopted a kitten, you will need to spend some time training them! The training process is relatively simple: Hill’s Pet recommends simply picking up your kitten and putting them in the litter box when it looks like they need to go, or after they’ve eaten a meal. When they use it appropriately, reward them with a treat!
Finally, finding a trustworthy vet is crucial. Even if your cat was vaccinated during their time at the shelter, you will want to take them in for their first check-up soon. You will want to make sure that your pet does not have any underlying health conditions that were not discovered at the shelter. To choose a vet, consider whether or not they take appointments on short notice, make house calls, or offer after-hours emergency services. Make sure they treat your cat with care at the first appointment!
Adopting your first cat is a joyful experience, but becoming a pet owner is also a big responsibility! If you don’t prepare in advance, you could find yourself feeling overwhelmed after a few days with your new cat. But if you know what to expect, and you’re ready to give your cat everything they need to feel safe and loved, the two of you will bond in no time.

Dogs are known to have a great sense of smell, so why not use that for a fun game! Start by hiding treats in a small area and then ask your dog to find them. When he starts to understand the game, expand to bigger areas.
It's helpful to use command terms like "search" or "find treats" so that your dog associates them to the game.
This is another nose game. Get three cups and line them up in a row in front of your doggie. To start off, first hide a treat under one cup while your dog is watching, and ask him to show you where the treat is. When he chooses correctly, let him have the treat and highly praise him. Once he seems to understand the game more, add some challenge and mix the cups around after you hide the treat.
Not only can playing tug of war be a great bonding experience, but it's an easy game to play indoors.
Blowing bubbles is a super easy and fun game! If your dog doesn't know how to chase bubbles, start by blowing a few bubbles at a time. If your dog doesn't seem to care about the bubbles, try pointing at them and encourage your dog to catch them. If he still doesn't seem interested, try to catch the bubbles yourself.
After playing, make sure to wipe off any remains from your dog's face with a wet towel.
This is a simple game - all you need is a muffin or cupcake pan and a few balls (tennis balls can be great for this). Begin by placing treats inside the cups, then place the balls on top. Next, let your doggie find the treats by moving the balls with his nose or paws. This is a great mental stimulator.

Each year there are thousands of dog poisoning cases just in the United States alone. A lot of them are caused by substances you probably have in your home, that may seem harmless to you.
For this reason, we wanted to call out a few of these poisons, to make sure you keep an eye on them.
]]>For this reason, we wanted to call out a few of these poisons, to make sure you keep an eye on them:
While house and garden plants are beautiful to have, many can be extremely toxic to pets. A lot of them can cause vomiting, drooling, increased heart rate, seizures, coma, and even death. Here's a list of the most common poisonous plants for dogs, however, any time you get a new plant, make sure to check the risks it can have to your fur-baby.
While these kinds of products can be helpful to your dog, there's a large number of animals that are unintentionally poisoned by these. This can happen if a dog accidentally ingests these products or if smaller dogs receive too much of them. Always check the instructions or with the vet, on how much your dog needs.
Heavy metals can be very harmful to dogs - they can cause gastrointestinal and neurological problems. Here are a few that you may find around the house:
While not all essential oils are dangerous to dogs, some can cause serious issues to them - so always consult with your veterinary doctor. A few essential oils that are harmful to dogs are cinnamon, peppermint, pine, wintergreen, anise, clove, thyme.
The chemical that dryer sheets have can be harmful to your dog if they chew on it or ingest it (even used ones). The smell is appealing to dogs, so make sure they don't have easy access to these.
The symptoms of a poisoned fog will depend due to the toxin they consumed, however, some of the most common signs are:

Most dog foods have the following sections:
Not every dog food product has a brand name. However, each product needs to have a unique identifier to distinguish it from others being sold.
According to the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO), at least 95% of the product must be the named ingredient. So for example, a pet food product name such as Turkey and Rice Flavor Dry Dog Food must include at least 95% of chicken (not counting the water used to process it). However, when the product name has "turkey" accompanied by "dinner", "entree", or "platter",10% of the entire product needs to be "turkey". Lastly, if the product name has something along the lines of"with turkey", then only 3% of "turkey" is required.
The Quantity section shows how much product is in the container. This can be measured by weight, liquid measure, or by count.
This section shows the amount of certain specific nutrients in the product.
To meet regulations set by the AAFCO in some states, manufacturers must list the minimum amount of protein and fat the food contains and the maximum amount of fiber and moisture as percentages of the product.
If the product is specifying something, such as that the dog food is low fat or has certain vitamins or supplements, then both maximum and minimum percentage must be showcased for each of those claims.
Ingredients must be listed in descending order by weight. According to AAFCO, each ingredient must be listed individually, so ingredients such as "animal protein products", can't be used. The difference between ingredients and nutrients needs to also to be clarified.
Most products should include this, though snacks, treats, and supplements are not enforced.
This statement shows whether the dog food provides complete and balanced nutrition for a specific life stage of your doggies or if the product is nutritionally adequate for all life stages.
This is pretty straightforward, it tells you how much you should feed your dog. However, it's always recommended to check with your vet how much your dog should be eating.
]]>Food allergies in dogs can start at any age. They can even present themselves if your dog has been eating the same food for months or years.
It's important to remember that there's a difference between food sensitivity and food allergies. An allergy triggers an immediate reaction (an immune response), food sensitivity doesn't. Your doggie may have food sensitivity if he has a gradual reaction to his food. It's always recommended to check with your veterinary, to make sure what your fur-baby has.
In most cases, environmental allergies are seasonal, so you may only notice your doggie having this kind of allergy during certain times of the year.
This can be one of the most alarming of all the allergies. Dogs can go into anaphylactic shock if they have a severe reaction to something.
While anaphylactic reactions are rare in dogs, it's always good to keep an eye on your dog whenever they get a vaccine, new medicine, or new food.
No matter the allergy, if your dog has ongoing symptoms or you notice a change in their behavior, we recommend taking your fur-baby to the vet.
]]>While there's no cat that's 100% hypoallergenic, these breeds are known to produce fewer allergens than other cats.
While these cats are long-hair cats, their skin produces less Fel d1, which is the protein found in cat's saliva that is responsible for causing allergies in most people.
Siberian are known to be playful, smart, and tend to get along with kids and other animals.
These cats have an extremely silky and soft coat, as they don't have an outer coat (like many other cats). This helps them shed a lot less hair and are therefore less likely to cause allergies.
They are affectionate and attention-seekers.
Balinese cats are known as a long-haired Siameses. They are another of the few breeds that produce less Fel d1 than other breeds, causing fewer allergies.
They are affectionate and active cats and require very little grooming.
This leopard-looking domestic cat is known to shed less than your average cat, as they have a dense coat. Brushing a Bengal regularly will decrease shedding even more.
They are highly intelligent, active, playful, and affectionate.
Russian Blues are a short-hair breed and produce less Fel d1 than other breeds.
They are intelligent and playful, but can also spend hours amusing themselves.
Similar to the Cornish Rex, the Devon Rex only has one undercoat. However, the Devon Rex has even less hair than the Cornish Rex.
These cats are very independent, however, they'll want attention and love if you're around.
Javanese cats only have one of the three layers of coat that regular cats have ( similar to the Cornish and Devon Rexes). The difference is that this cat breed only has the top layer of coat that most cats have instead of the down coat.
They are active, vocal, and like attention.
Sphynxes shed fewer allergens due to their lack of hair. While they don't shed, they will need frequent baths to remove oil buildups on their skin.
They are very loving, well-behaved, and high energy cats.

This one is an instant classic! Who isn't a sucker for those adorable cute pups? We definitely are. And there's 101 of them! There is a live action and an animated version of this movie, and both are pawsome.
This movie is about an adorable dog name Bud, who also happens to be a pro at basketball. When he meets his new owner Josh, they become instant best friends. However, Bud's former owner, who is not a good person, eventually tries to reclaim Bud, and Josh has to figure out a way to stop it. This movie also has many sequels, all featuring different sports.
One of my favorite pet related live-action movies! It's about two dogs and a cat who are left on a family's friend ranch while their family foes on vacation. Once they start to worry about whether they have been left behind, they go on a heartwarming and adventurous journey to find their family.
This is another classic Disney movie. Who can forget that iconic spaghetti kiss scene? It's about a high-bred dog named Lady, whose life changes after her humans have a baby. As a consequence, she ends up meeting The Tramp (a dog from the streets) and going on an adventure that changes their lives forever. And with the launch of Disney+, this classic was also re-imagined as a live action. Whether you watch the live action or the animated version though, it's sure to be one of your favorites!
Ever wonder what our pets do when we go off to work? This movie (and it's sequel) dive into that question and the result is full of adventure! Just make sure your pets don't get any crazy ideas from watching this movie.
At 185 lbs, Beethoven is not only cute but he's also a little of a trouble-maker. While his family starts to adjust to his mishaps (and at the same time falls in love with him), they have to deal with a scheming vet who tries to steal the dog for a deadly experiment. This movie also has many sequels to binge after the original.
There are plenty of more movies of course, but we just wanted to share a few of our favorites. Do you have a favorite that you don't see on this list? Let us know down in the comments!
So now go relax, spend quality time with fido, and if you need ideas for movie snacks that are safe for your dog, we've got you covered with fruits and vegetables that are doggy-friendly and double as snacks.

As many cats like to nibble on plants, we have put together a list of the most common plants that you want to avoid, as well as a complete list from the ASPCA.
The ASPCA also has a complete list with images of the plants.
As cats can easily climb over furniture, the best thing to do is to avoid having any of these plants at home. However, if you do end up with one of these plants, make sure it's located somewhere your cat can't access it.
]]>Have you ever wonder why your dog sneezes? A dog's sneeze can be due to allergies, a virus, need of attention, excitement, or even just play.
Below are a few types of sneezes and its causes.
]]>A dog's sneeze can be due to allergies, a virus, wanting attention, excitement, or even just play.
Below are a few types of sneezes and its causes.
Many dogs sneeze in the middle of playing with other dogs or with their humans, especially when they get really excited. This type of sneeze is normal and harmless, all it means is that your dog is having fun. Dogs use their whole bodies to communicate, and this is just another way to portray their excitement.
If your dog is sneezing regularly, touching their nose, rubbing it on the ground, or bleeding from it, there might be something suck in their nose. This can happen as dogs tend to sniff constantly (inside out or outside).
If you think your dog has something in their nose, you should contact your veterinarian immediately. They can prevent the object from going deeper inside the nose.
If your dog is constantly sneezing, it can potentially be a nasal infection. Some dogs get a nasal infection when they inhale a fungus from dust or grass. If it's a nasal infection, your dog won't only sneeze, but he will have nose pain, discharge, swelling, and nosebleeds.
Another less common way dogs get nasal infections is by absorbing nasal mites when digging dirt with their noses. These can also cause nosebleeds, discharge, and irritation.
If your dog has any of the symptoms mentioned above, take him to your veterinary as soon as possible.
Just like humans, dogs can also have allergies to pollen, dust, mold, insect bites, food, or an irritant in the air that they're exposed to. If alongside the sneezing, you also notice that your dog is itching more than normal, may have a runny discharge from their nose or eyes, or is coughing and wheezing, then he most likely has allergies.
If you think this is the case, talk to your vet. They can help you figure out the kind of allergies your dog may have and prescribe treatment to make your doggie feel better.
A dog's reverse sneeze is believed to be caused due to irritation of the soft palate and throat, which results in a spasm. A reverse sneeze typically sounds like a gasping, choking or snorting sound, however, as scary as it sounds, they tend to be harmless.
Typically, when a dog is fake sneezing, they tend to watch you as they sneeze. They also like to get close to you, to make sure they get a reaction.
Another way to make sure it's a fake sneeze is body language. If your dog is wagging his tail, jumping, raisins his ears, or putting his paws on top of you, then it most likely means they just want to get your attention.
No one knows your dog better than you, however, so if you ever feel like something isn't right, it's always a good idea to call your vet or to take your dog directly to one.

Here are a few reasons on how your fur-baby keeps you healthy:
Whether you own a dog or a cat, your pet needs plenty of exercise and playtime. So every time you're actively playing with them or taking them out on a walk, you're also exercising your body and losing some calories.
If you're interested in doing more, there's also plenty of pet yoga classes online or at physical locations. Having a cute face to look at while working out makes it easier to get through the exercises.
Studies have shown that stroking, hugging, and petting your pets decreases levels of cortisol (a stress-related hormone), lowers blood pressure, and helps release oxytocin, which is a hormone linked to emotional bonding. The release of this hormone helps stabilize a sense of calmness between the pet and the owner.
Having a pet as a companion also reduces loneliness and helps boosts a person's mood.
When kids are exposed to pets at a young age (especially before they're one), they have higher chances of not developing allergies and asthma when they are older.
There's also increasing evidence that dogs can improve our immune system. This is because of they the bacteria they get exposed to outdoors that we may not directly encounter.
Our pets can make it easier for us to meet new people, make more friends, and appear more approachable to others. Studies have shown that it's easier to meet people when you have a dog, as they are seen as an easy ice-breaker. They make it easier for you and others to start up a conversation.
Studies show that kids who have ADHD have shown to have better focus when they are exposed to predictable routines. Owning a pet requires you to have a consistent routine.
Studies have also shown that kids with autism can connect better with others when they have pets. Pets help them feel more secure and petting them can be a soothing experience that helps create a sense of calm.
]]>Having a pet at home can be one of the best experiences in a kid's life. They bring so much love and joy to a home! However, before bringing a new pet home, it's important to prepare your kids and yourself, to ensure a happy home.
]]>Here are a few tips that can make this new adjustment a good one:
Bringing a new dog or cat to a new environment can be scary for them, so while you continue to learn your new pet's personality, make sure to not leave babies or small kids alone with the new pet.
Cats can sometimes play rough. They're used to scratching and biting during playtime, as that's how they tend to interact with their siblings. So providing cats with scratching boards and a good amount of playtime can help decrease the odds of scratching you or your kids. It's also important that kids approach them gently and respectfully.
Dogs learn good behavior through training, so with some time and patience, your pup should learn how to properly treat his human siblings. However, from the very beginning, it's important to teach kids how to approach a dog properly and to pet respectfully.
As mentioned before, a new environment can be a bit stressful for a pet, so allowing it to feel safe and comfortable can take a little time. It's suggested to keep kids out of the way of the pets until they are more settled in and they start to come around on their own.
When a kid meets a new dog, move slowly. Start by allowing the dog to sniff the back of the kid's hand before petting him (this will allow the dog to know that he's not in danger). Once the dog looks comfortable, allow the kid to start petting the dog under the chin or around the chest and neck. Avoid at first sensitive areas like the legs, tail, head, and stomach.
When meeting a new cat, a kid should start by gently petting it when the kitty approaches him/her. Start by petting the head or back, and avoid sensitive areas like the legs, tail, and stomach. Cats can also get easily frightened by loud noises and sudden movements, so make sure kids speak softly and calmly to the cat.
Bringing a new pet home comes with lots of responsibility. Kids need to understand that there are rules when it comes to their new dog or cat.
When it comes to pets, training is key.
Introducing new pets to kids tend to go smoothly, however, it's important to always keep a lookout for warning signs.
Whenever a dog starts to growl, it's ideal to intervene. Growling is how dogs communicate that they are uncomfortable or upset.
Cats also tend to hiss whenever they feel threatened. Their bodies also tend to get stiff, as a sign of discomfort.
]]>
Some plants might cause discomfort, others can be fatal, so check below the most common poisonous plants, as well as a complete list from the ASPCA.
The ASPCA also has a complete list with images of the plants.
The best thing to do is to not get any plant that can be dangerous to your dog. However, if you do end up with one of these plants, make sure to put a barrier around it or place it somewhere high or far enough, where your doggie doesn't have access to it.
